Data Analysis
Client: One2One Ltd, Jul 1999 - 2000
The use of mobile phones is increasingly rapidly, and services based on them are also developing. This requires significant investment by mobile phone operators to ensure that sufficient capacity is available to satisfy demand in all the relevant locations. With mobile phones often used by people 'on the move', One2One wished to ensure that they had planned for adequate resources to supply rail passengers with an uninterrupted service. This issue is not entirely straightforward, because railways pass through tunnels in which extra equipment may be needed.
The Railway Consultancy Ltd was therefore commissioned to provide estimates of the number of passengers travelling on various parts of the UK rail network. Analysis was carried out to ensure that temporal and geographical variations in the demand for mobile phone services could be accommodated. Historic data needed to be brought up-to-date by taking account of trends in demand, and location-specific factors such as the opening of new stations. Various data tabulations and reports were produced to answer a range of specific queries, including by market segment.
