Marple Station Redevelopment
Client: FOMS (Friends of Marple Station), Apr 2017 - Oct 2020
Marple station was once a grand affair with mainline trains from Manchester to London via Derby. However, by the 1970s it had been reduced to secondary status, and (in those financially-constrained times) it was fitted with a simple single-story flat-roof building. However, 50 years later, and with traffic growth, the building was simply unfit for purpose, both in terms of size and quality (single glazing and a flat roof failing to keep out the weather). Local pressure group FOMS assembled a funding package which enabled RCL to undertake the assessment of various options for a mixed-use building, some of which examined the potential for construction of extra storeys. Whilst our analysis identified that extra floors for offices and/or flats would not be worthwhile, the concept remains of a building with community use, as well as functioning as a railway waiting-room. Supported by architectural and engineering colleagues, a generic design which satisfies relevant Benefit:Cost ratio tests has now been agreed upon - and all that is required is the funding.
