First Great Eastern Performance Team Study
Train Operating Companies are required under the terms of their franchise agreements to compile detailed statistics relating to operating performance for reporting to various statutory bodies, as well as needing similar statistics for management information purposes. Many of the specific requirements have evolved over a period of time, as the structure of the industry has changed, and as a result the same (or very similar) information is often compiled in different formats for different purposes.
First Great Eastern (FGE) recognised these shortcomings, and commissioned The Railway Consultancy to undertake a brief study of the of the systems and processes used within the FGE Performance Team and to give a detached view of the ways in which these might be improved or simplified. In the course of this work, it soon became apparent that because of the way in which the processes have evolved, and the variety of systems and software used historically to develop them, a considerable part of the workload was occasioned by the need to transfer data manually from a report generated by one system or software to another for further manipulation and analysis. In addition, some of the software in use was effectively obsolete, and technical support was no longer available.
The Consultancy recommended that the entire process be redesigned, using standard software, on the basis that, as far as possible, all data be entered once (only) into a single system, from which outputs in all the required formats would be generated. FGE has subsequently undertaken a complete redesign along these lines and considers the process greatly improved.
