Saudi Railways Organization - Press Release
1 February 2011
The Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) has awarded two contracts to a consortium of Summit Consulting (of KSA), Irolli Trading Company (of KSA) and the Railway Consultancy (UK). The first study covers planning work associated with the development of the rapidly-evolving Saudi rail network, in particular choices to be made between developing the roles and functions of the two routes between the Gulf port city of Dammam and the capital Riyadh. The second study concerns the outline specification of a proposed ‘dry port’ for container traffic at Hofuf, in this corridor. The projects, which were awarded through international tender, cover work to be undertaken over the next six months and have a joint value of around USD 470,000.
The team will be supported by container port expert Robert Cochrane in its development of proposals for the Hofuf terminal. However, it will be basing the network development work on line-level studies it has already carried out in Saudi Arabia itself (e.g. on the Jizan and Al-Khamis branches), and on more strategic network planning undertaken recently for the Ethiopian Railway Corporation.
