Audit & Assessment
Audits
Many elements of a railway need to work properly if the whole is to function efficiently as intended. However, it is not sufficient just to check that equipment or processes (such as cleaning) are working, without a knowledge of how they interact with other elements of the railway. Any audit of these functions requires a good understanding of the systems nature of the railway, and of the detailed operation of related (e.g. ticketing, timetabling, train maintenance) systems. It is also important to understand the differences between engineering processes (which should be predictable) and human processes (less so), and how the choice and extent of sampling should be a key feature of any audit procedure.
Whilst some audits may be mandatory, RCL’s approach has always been to try to be pro-active, in suggesting changes to methods, scope or extent; that potentially includes recommending when processes are over-specified or redundant, and hence adding little value.
